I’m a lover of natural makeup and skincare, and I think it’s well known by now that oil can be highly beneficial to skin. No matter your skin type, problems or needs, there’s an oil out there for you. These are the 5 best oils that you can incorporate into your skincare routine, today!

1. Castor Oil
Castor oil has connotations of what children were force fed ‘back in the day’ to keep them healthy. Whilst it has many benefits when consumed – such as promoting healthy sleep, increasing blood circulation and improving vision – it’s also good for your exterior too. In terms of skin care, castor oil can treat dry skin, wounds and rashes due to it’s undecylenic acid. Castor oil is also regarded as being a great boost to hair growth; with many swearing on using it to enhance eyelashes and eyebrows. There is a possibility of a negative skin reaction, though, so maybe water down the oil a little if you have sensitive skin. Otherwise, you’re good to go.
2. Sweet Almond Oil
I remember reading about how sweet almond oil does wonders for under eye circles, and getting excited. As usual, I was disappointed when I used it; my natural under eye circles cannot be helped. I did, however, notice my skin was plump and hydrated around my eyes and my lashes were exceptionally soft and shiny compared to how they were before. According to organicfacts.net, ‘sweet almond oil is particularly high in vitamin E, supplying over 200% of your daily requirement in 100 grams’. Vitamin E is well known for it’s hydration properties, as it’s used in a fair few expensive lip balms and skin care products. It turns out that sweet almond oil (definitely make sure not to pick up general almond oil, the cooking ingredient) is all you need to purchase!
3. Olive Oil
Mediterranean diets are some of the healthiest in the world, and one of the reasons why is the high olive oil content. Whilst there’s a slight debate over the use of olive oil for frying foods – I personally love and use it all the time, some people insist the smoke point isn’t high enough for it to be healthy when it is’t raw – the use for skin care is widely promoted. Its hydrating and softening properties can reduce signs of ageing and dryness. It doesn’t clog pores, and can moisturise deep into the skin.
4. Coconut Oil
I remember a dermatologist talking about how coconut oil can clog pores and is generally not great when used constantly, however I do know from personal use that it is exceptionally soothing on broken skin. I’ve used it to clear up eczema, razor rashes, dry skin, broken cuticles…the list goes on, really. I do still heed that dermatologist’s warning and avoid regular use, but I know it’s there for a quick remedy when I need it. I also know a number of people who use it to remove makeup, as it breaks down waterproof mascara and lipstick like a dream. It can then itself be removed with a damp cloth or face halo. This is also technically double cleansing, a technique I go into further in my 8 Simple Ways to Improve your Skincare Routine post.
5. Argan Oil
Argan oil contains omega 6 and omega 9, fatty acids which can be beneficial to acne-prone skin as it reduces sebum levels. Again, this oil is rich and should be used sparingly – when I put a small amount on to my skin I notice that it absorbs quickly. If too much is used it will leave a residue, which I find my hair ends up sticking to whilst I sleep (or worse, it rubs off on my pillow and my skin doesn’t even feel the benefits!). Argan oil can also be used to smooth and tame frizzy hair, as well as benefit skin. It’s a good all-rounder oil to invest in.
That’s it for my top 5! Do you have any oils you think work wonders for your skin, or even hair? I would love to try them out.

Great post!! Absolutely love oils as I have really dry skin. I’ve been using rose hip oil for about 2 years and I really love that. I also have really been loving grape seed oil. Haven’t tried any in my hair, love a coconut oil mask for my hair though🌟

I haven’t tried rose hip, though normally anything with rose in it brings me out in a mild rash so I might have some sort of allergy… Grape seed sounds like something I should look into though, as I have dry skin too. Yes, I also find coconut oil works wonders for conditioning and hydrating hair! Thanks for reading! X

Ah really, that’s a bummer as so much stuff as rose water in it. Yeah I really like it and apparently it’s good for dark circles too so I put some under my eyes before I go to bed, not sure it works though. I kind of think if you have dark circles there’s not much you can do unfortunately. No problem!😊

I totally agree! I have such bad under eye circles and it’s just skin pigment, not a lack of sleep or whatever. Nothing will help them… I’ll definitely try grape seed oil if I get a chance☺
